33 Stonegate in York - Period Building Exterior

33 Stonegate, York

Stonegate is one of York’s oldest and most historic streets, and is a popular, if not narrow, route from St Helen’s Square to York Minster.

33 Stonegate is a Grade II* listed building constructed in the early 17th century. It comprises three storeys and an attic, with the upper storeys ‘jettied’  (a building technique favoured in medieval and Tudor times where upper storeys project beyond the floor below). This top-heavy style allowed for increased floor space within the building without taking up space at street level.

The red devil carving on the corner of the property is a nod to its use as a printer’s business (a ‘printer’s devil’ is an historical term for a young apprentice in a printing shop whose role in mixing ink would often account for a dark, ink-stained, devilish appearance).

Many of the building’s original features have been preserved, including its 17th century staircase, internal doors and front room panelling on the first floor.

The building has been the flagship shop of Abraham Moon, a Yorkshire tweed producer, since 2017.
