Guest & Visitor FAQs
Rightfully Restored
Hopton Hall is a historic treasure on the edge of the beautiful Peak District, with over 600 years of history as the former home of the Gell family – one of Derbyshire’s most well-known families. Over the years, it’s welcomed some famous guests too, including Oliver Cromwell, Mary Queen of Scots and Queen Caroline.
Today, the gardens are managed by our Estate Director Spencer Tallis and his team. Over the last 27 years they have lovingly restored the formal areas and added plenty of new features. The one-acre walled garden is a highlight, filled with over 2,000 rose bushes in 40 beds, all framed by 5,000 perfectly clipped box plants.
You can follow around 2 km of winding paths through the gardens – past the croquet lawn, rose walk, ponds, a wildlife lake, arboretum, laburnum tunnel, birch avenue and more. It’s a lovely place to visit in the summer, with something new to discover around every corner.
