The Hopton Hall Estate has built up a portfolio of more than 40 Grade II listed historical buildings, pubs and high street properties, predominantly in the city of York and historic market town of Ashbourne. Our ultimate aim is to ensure that both places continue to be vibrant destinations, attracting independent retailers, pubs and restaurants.
It is a process that involves careful preservation or reintroduction of the architectural features of some of the most historically important, iconic buildings in the North of England.
York is world renowned as a city of both history and beauty. Its origins can be traced back to The Romans in 71 AD, with Viking and Medieval settlers adding to the rich tapestry of the city’s architecture and culture. The city contains over 1,500 listed buildings.
Ashbourne’s origins date back to the Domesday Book of 1086. It has been a market town since the 13th century, gaining its prosperity from its position as a coaching stage on the old road from London to Manchester. The parish contains over 160 listed buildings.

Hopton Hall
Hopton, Derbyshire Dales
Grade II listed Hopton Hall was the ancestral home of the Gell family for over 600 years. In 2023 it was bought as a family home by Chris and Andi Harvey with two goals in mind: to restore the 16th century manor house and its grounds; and to continue providing the best and friendliest of welcomes for visitors to its seasonal events and to its cottage guests.
Purey Cust House
York
Purey Cust House is considered the largest and most architecturally significant private residence within York’s historic city walls. It stands directly beside York Minster on the former Stoneyard site. In January 2026, Chris and Andi Harvey became the new owners and custodians of the property and are looking forward to applying the care and attention that such a prestigious building deserves.
26 St John Street
Ashbourne
An iconic 15th century oak timber-framed building, long renowned as the home of Ashbourne’s Gingerbread Shop. Legend tells us that the recipe for Ashbourne’s famous gingerbread was given to the baker by a French prisoner of war, billeted in Ashbourne during the Napoleonic Wars, and the popular biscuit continued to be on sale at the premises for over 200 years.

Hopton Hall Gallery was founded in April 2026 with the aim of building something that connects centuries of craftsmanship with the artists shaping today's landscape – both in the gallery's vision and in the 18th century Ashbourne building it calls home. There have been significant renovations to create a 21st century art gallery that celebrates both contemporary art and heritage.
27 Shambles
York
The Shambles is one of Europe’s best preserved medieval streets and is often cited as the inspiration for Diagon Alley in the Harry Potter film series.
Graded II listed 27 Shambles, located in the Central Historic Core Conservation Area was built around 1840, and later adapted to include a 20th century shopfront.
21 High Petergate
York
An early 18th century, Grade II listed building situated directly opposite York Minster.
The establishment takes its name from the revelation during the original inspection of the building that the serving area is 22 yards long – an exact match to the length of a cricket pitch!

Ashbourne
Located on the junction of Church Street and Dig Street, the building was, for many years, a bank but is now home to the Machine Inn – a stylish and relaxed dining venue packed with historic features and an open kitchen. It is also a boutique hotel offering rooms and a well-appointed apartment with a 4-star accommodation rating.

The Knockerdown Inn
Near Ashbourne
The story of The Knockerdown Inn is deeply connected to the history of the Hopton Hall Estate and in 2023, it was proudly reacquired by the Hopton Hall Estate, marking a new chapter for this much‑loved Derbyshire pub.
The Old Gate Inn
Brassington
The Old Gate (or Ye Olde Gate) at Brassington was built in 1616 and has a relatively rare Grade II* listing since much of its interior - including its large, magnificent fireplace - has remained unchanged. Located near the shores of Carsington Water, it is one of Derbyshire’s oldest pubs and also houses the village’s only shop, The Pantry.
FURTHER AFIELD
Amoreira, Madeira
Amoreira is a luxury property in an exclusive neighbourhood of Funchal, Madeira. It was added to the Hopton Hall Estate portfolio as a private holiday home.
The five-bedroomed property covers a 400sqm internal footprint, matched by a similarly sized outdoor space. Its Portuguese name (which translates to ‘Mulberry tree’) is a nod to its gardens which feature a number of vine and exotic fruit trees.
Amoreira was constructed using the finest concrete, engineered to rest more heavily at the back of the house, thus allowing the building to be cantilevered without the need for any kind of pillar. The result is uninterrupted, panoramic views of the beautiful Bay of Funchal which is best enjoyed from the full-length upper deck balcony.
