July's Opening of The Walled Garden
Each July, Hopton Hall welcomes visitors to its Walled Garden.
Visitors have the opportunity to meander along pretty pathways and appreciate the surrounding architecture and other interesting features of the grounds, including:
The Rose Garden – a one-acre garden featuring over 2,000 rose bushes in 40 beds, all framed by 5,000 clipped box plants. Once derelict space, it is now a spectacular feature created and tended by our Estate Director, Spencer Tallis. Spencer first began this project entirely on his own in early 2000 – happily now aided by son Charlie.
The Crinkle Crankle Wall – a remarkable example of a waved wall structure which, it is believed, was first introduced to England in the 18th century. Its decoration is quirky but also practical since its wavy shape provides a stronger structure.
Hopton’s Crinkle Crankle wall was the inspiration for Chatsworth House’s Serpentine Hedges, introduced in 1953 by the Duchess of Devonshire, Deborah Cavendish.

Month of Art
The Summer House – a 11-metre-high tower believed to have been built in the 1800s. Standing at the head of the Walled Garden, it is said to have gained its height when the owner Philip Gell instructed his team to continue building until he told them to stop. A delayed return from Westminster meant the building reached a heady two storeys!
Month of Art
The opening of the grounds coincides with the Month of Art celebration where visitors can watch local artists at work, capturing inspiration from the grounds of the Hall. Visitors to the garden on the last weekend of July are invited to vote for their three favourite artworks.
Café at Hopton Hall
Visitors to the Walled Garden and Month of Art celebration are welcome to tie in a visit to the Café at Hopton Hall where they will find sweeping views, indoor seating and an outdoor terrace.
